Petfinder.com Foundation Awards Disaster Grants

Dog in HaitiSince the beginning, the Petfinder.com Foundation has helped homeless animals at times when man-made or natural disaster strikes. Earlier in 2010, the Foundation joined a coalition of animal welfare groups, Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH), established to help the animals affected by the January 12th earthquake. Most recently, the Foundation awarded two disaster grants to help two rescues rebuild and recover from natural disasters.

One grant went to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley in Howes Cave, NY, which recently suffered major wind damage to its roof. Subsequent rains caused flooding damage inside the shelter. The water caused ongoing damage to the building where the animals are living. Without insurance to cover the damage, the shelter turned to the Petfinder.com Foundation for financial help. The application was reviewed and approved by our staff and board, and the shelter has received a $5,000 disaster grant.

The second grant went to Tennessee’s Nashville Cat Rescue, which was hit hard by the floods in the state. The rescue had taken in several cats for people displaced by the floods. Staff was in need of supplies and medication to care for the cats. They have received a $3,000 grant.

Thank you to our partners at Merial who provide funding to the Petfinder.com Foundation disaster fund through their Paws to Save Pets program.
