Kennebec Valley Humane Society: Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We held a half-off dog-adoption special October 13-16, 2016. The grant funds reduced the fees for 11 dogs to $87.50-$150 depending on the age and size of the dog.

The Orvis/Petfinder Foundation grant helped animals in our care who needed a boost of exposure to find their forever homes. We find that running specials like our Half-Off Adoption weekend increases our adoption and visitation rates at the shelter. All incoming animals receive health evaluations, spay/neuter surgeries if needed, vaccinations and flea/worm treatments. Because of the cost of these treatments, we rely heavily on grants and fundraisers to supplement adoption fees and make these events successful. This grant specifically reduced the fees for 11 dogs who were mostly longer-term residents with medical/behavioral limitations.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Wallaby was here for much longer than he should have been! He was a sweet, loving, younger dog with loads of energy. He was scooped up at our adoption event (first photo) and we are so happy for him! The second photo is his intake photo.

Sadie came to us in pretty rough shape (third photo). She is an older, laid-back girl who was being overlooked for a while at our shelter. We knew she would eventually find her perfect home — and she did during our adoption special!

Piper (fourth photo) was at our shelter for way too long because of his restrictions. He was a dog with high energy and could not be placed in a home with any other dogs, cats or small animals. This made it a lot harder to find a loving home for him, but during our adoption special, the right family came in and adopted him!
