Studies
have shown that the Hide, Perch and Go box reduces stress levels in
shelter cats. With less stress, shelter cats and kittens are happier
and healthier and therefore, more adoptable!
That is why the Petfinder.com Foundation is currently distributing grants worth $100,000 of Hide, Perch and Go Boxes. This grant is from our Care and Feeding fund which is made possible by our partnership with and The Animal Rescue Site’s click to give program and GreaterGood.org, the PETCO Foundation and donations from individuals.
2009 Grant recipient, Justin Gallick of Pima Animal Care Center
in Tucson, AZ, has seen a significant difference in the attitudes of
his resident cats. “They’re more mellow from the beginning,” he says.
“When they first arrive and they are scared and timid, this box gives
them a comfort zone.” Justin said that the boxes increase the size of
the living space each cat has. When you add a Hide, Perch & Go Box
to the cage, you provide a hideaway spot (Hide) and a place for the cat
to sit on top (Perch). And, the Hide, Perch and Go box folds up to go,
to provide further comfort to the cat in its forever home. The ultimate
goal of the box is to keep the cats and kittens healthy. As Justin
confirms, Upper Respiratory Infection is a big problem for shelters,
where stressed cats become more susceptible.
All of this,
for $3.50 per box. Pima Animal Care Center, like most animal shelter
organizations, is working with a limited budget. The boxes could be
considered a luxury, but Justin considers them a necessity. “The boxes
can definitely make a difference in the number of adoptions.”
