Animal Shelter & Rescue Success Stories

Much of our work funds grants under $5,000 to local shelters like yours to help them prepare for emergencies, recover from disaster and better protect, care for and adopt out homeless pets.

The Animal Rescue Site 2011 $300,000 Shelter+ Challenge Has Begun!


The Petfinder.com Foundation has been working with The Animal Rescue Site since 2008 to provide grants to network members in the Shelter+ Challenge. We want to share a wonderful thank you note from The Humane Society of Grand Bahama in Freeport, Bahamas, one of the winners of the 2010 Holiday $110,000 Shelter+ Challenge.

"We wish to thank The Animal Rescue Site for their generous sponsorship of the Shelter + Challenge. Our animals very much appreciated our $1,000 check, which we used to purchase vaccines, de-worming medicine and other medications. Thank you!" Elizabeth Burrows, Executive Director.

You only have until March 20th in this first voting round of the year to help your favorite local eligible shelter or rescue organization to win one of 69 prizes totaling $75,000. Amongst the prizes are: ten $1,000 weekly winners, four prizes awarded for our New Beginnings Story Contest, regional awards and a $5,000 Grand Prize.

Animals in Devastating House Fire Saved by
The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation

puppies with humane officeThe owner of The Plain and Fancy Animal Rescue of Pennsylvania was devastated to find her house destroyed following an electrical fire. The Rescue, which helps puppy mill and street dogs, housed 40 dogs, the owner and her family. In addition, the day before the fire, the rescue had agreed to take 50 dogs from a breeder.

Following the fire, all 90 dogs were taken to The Humane League of Lancaster County. The Humane League also had taken in dogs removed from two Pennsylvania puppy mills. They received a $10,000 disaster grant from The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation and the Petfinder.com Foundation to help the animals receive medical attention, proper vaccinations, and spay/neuter services. Technology Grant Helps Two Shelters

The Petfinder.com Foundation recently provided a digital camera and two memory cards as part of a technology grant to two shelters. Why? Digital cameras allow shelters to keep photos of their adorable, adoptable animals updated on Petfinder.com. SpokAnimal Care and Meadow Gates Farm Sanctuary were in need of a digital camera, an important part of advertising homeless pets. Read more.

Customer Service Awards

We have been hearing great stories from the recipients of the Maddie's Fund “Put Your Best Face Forward” grant and The Animal Rescue Site’s $100,000 Shelter+ Challenge. Thanks to Maddie’s Fund, the Petfinder.com Foundation provided $50,000 to shelters. The grant rewards shelters that provide excellent customer service that helps to get their animals adopted. Hide, Perch and Go

Hide Perch and GoStudies have shown that the Hide, Perch and Go box reduces stress levels in shelter cats. With less stress, shelter cats and kittens are happier and healthier and therefore, more adoptable!

That is why the Petfinder.com Foundation is currently distributing grants worth $300,000 of Hide, Perch and Go Boxes. This grant is from our Care and Feeding fund which is made possible by our partnership with and The Animal Rescue Site’s click to give program and GreaterGood.org, the PETCO Foundation and donations from individuals. Animal Planet ROAR and Animal Lifeline

Thanks to the Animal Planet ROAR Campaign, the Petfinder.com Foundation received a $25,000 grant which we awarded to Petfinder.com Member, Animal-Lifeline. With these funds a mix of students and Professionals traveled to Braxton, Clay and Ritchie Counties in West Virginia to provide shelter repair, training, and finally the transport of approximately 35 adoptable dogs. Petfinder.com Foundation Awards Disaster Grants

Gulf Oil SpillAnimal Shelters Impacted by Gulf Oil Spill

The Petfinder.com Foundation, in partnership with Merial "Paws to Save Pets" and The Animal Rescue Site's Gifts That Give More™ program, is opening up $150,000 worth of grant applications for shelters and rescue groups affected by the Gulf Oil Spill. Animal shelters in the Galveston, Texas area all the way to Tallahassee, Florida have been impacted by the oil spill crisis. As always, the Foundation is eager to respond to the need of homeless animals when disaster strikes… Full story.

Dog in HaitiAnimal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH)

Since the beginning, the Petfinder.com Foundation has helped homeless animals at times when man-made or natural disaster strikes. Earlier in 2010, the Foundation joined a coalition of animal welfare groups, Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH), established to help the animals affected by the January 12th earthquake.  Most recently, the Foundation awarded two disaster grants to help two rescues rebuild and recover from natural disasters.
